Is roof membrane fireproof? Broof (t2) explained

Fire is the issue that most often stops a roof renovation, and it's a fair question. When you put a new layer on the roof, you change how the roof behaves if sparks land on it. Here's what the rules say and how Luna Roof is classified.
Broof (t2): the classification you should look for
In Denmark and the rest of the EU, fire resistance is assessed from the outside according to the standard EN 13501-5. The classification is called Broof, and the letter in brackets indicates which test method is used. In Denmark it is Broof (t2) that applies.
The test involves placing a burning wooden basket on a roof sample, adding wind, and measuring how far the fire spreads and whether burning material drips down. If the roof passes, it is approved for general construction without special distance requirements to boundaries.
Luna Roof roof membrane is classified Broof (t2). It is also stated on the data sheet together with the CE marking according to EN 1504-2 and ETAG 005.
What does this mean in practice?
This means that the membrane can be used on ordinary roofs on homes, garages, carports, summer houses, warehouses and commercial buildings, without you having to apply for an exemption or keep extra distance from neighboring buildings.
This does not mean that the material is non-combustible. No bitumen or polymer-based roofing is non-combustible. Broof (t2) is about the fire not spreading and not dripping. This is what the building regulations require.
Sparks from wood-burning stoves, grills and fireworks
The classic scenario is a spark from the chimney or a New Year's rocket landing on the roof. This is exactly the situation the Broof test is built to mimic, with embers and wind at the same time.
A roof sealed with Luna Roof behaves like a regular approved roof covering. There is no additional risk from having the membrane applied, and because the surface is seamless, there are no loose edges or overlays where embers can get stuck.
When should you ask an advisor anyway?
There are situations where the fire requirement is stricter, and where you need to have it checked in the specific project:
- Buildings located close to the boundary line
- Attached terraced houses where there are requirements for fire protection or fire compartmentation
- Industrial and warehouse buildings over a certain size
- Buildings with special requirements, such as institutions and assembly rooms
In those cases, it is not the membrane alone that decides the matter, but the entire roof structure including insulation and underlayment. Ask your advisor or the municipality's building department.
Temperature is not the same as fire
Two numbers are often mixed up. Luna Roof is tested to operate from -40°C to +90°C. It is the operating temperature, that is, what the membrane can last for year after year without becoming brittle or soft.
Fire resistance is something completely different and is measured in the test that gives Broof (t2). When someone states a degree number in connection with fire, always ask for the test report itself. A loose number without a standard behind it does not say anything about what the roof can be used for.
